42% of Minsk inhabitants are not against public actions of sexual minorities

A social quiz, which was made by Belarusian sociological laboratory “Novak” according to a request of a partner of LGBT Human Rights project “GayBelarus”, Russian LGBT Human Rights project GayRussia.Ru, revealed that 42% of Minsk inhabitants are not against public actions of sexual minorities for their civil rights. Among the Belarusian one third of the responders are not against such actions in common.

The results of the research show, that among the inhabitants of Minsk 25,9% think that the homosexuals should have all rights to hold public actions, and 16,5% of the responders treat such actions indifferently, choosing an answer option “I don’t care”. Among the Belarusians in common the quantity of people for public actions of gay and lesbian people is 14,1%, and 24% treat it indifferently. Also the research revealed that 57,7% of Minsk inhabitants and 61,9% of the Belarusian denied that the homosexuals should have rights to hold their actions, having responded to the questions of sociologists strongly negatively.

According to the first representative quiz about the attitude of the Belarusian to the people of homosexual orientation, the responders were asked a question: “In a lot of countries of the world people with untraditional sexual orientation hold meetings and demonstrations to support their rights, and also to attract attention of the society to their problems. Do you think people of untraditional sexual orientation in Belarus should have their rights to hold such actions in Minsk and other big cities of the country or not?

The quiz fixes a well-known law of changing people’s attitude to LGBT rights depending on the respondents’ age. The majority of people which think that the homosexuals should have their rights to hold public actions are not older than 35 years old. Also women are a bit more tolerant to the homosexuals.

The quiz of “Novak” laboratory on the request of GayRussia.Ru project was made among the population of the Republic of Belarus at the age of 18 and older from September 27th till October 12th, 2009. During the research 1100 were questioned (including 209 people in Minsk).

We remind you that on May 15th, 2010 Belarusian and Russian gay-activists of LGBT Human Rights projects “GayBelarus” and “GayRussia” have an intention to organize the second Slavic Gay Pride in Minsk. Due to this they will hand in city government of the capitol all the necessary documents to hold the public Human Rights action. the final format of the future action is still uncertain.

The first Slavic Gay Pride took place in Moscow on the final day of “Eurovision” contest this year on the 16th of May. Despite the ban of the action by the government of Russian capitol, about 70 activists came to Vorobiovy Gory to show their protest against homophobia and discrimination.

A chairman of “GayBelarus” project and co organizer of Slavic Pride from the Belarusian side Sergey Androsenko thinks that “the results of the research are not bad, but not good enough. We see that there is a lot of different work to be done to increase the level of tolerance in Minsk and all over Belarus”.

The chairman of GayRussia.Ru project and co organizer of Slavic Pride from the Russian side Nikolai Alexeev commented on the results of the research: “Though the majority of the responders in Minsk and in Belarus in common deny the homosexuals to have their rights for public actions, and it’s not a surprise in the country, which doesn’t hurry up to say goodbye to Soviet past. The data we got tells us that the quantity of Minsk inhabitants, who are not against public actions of sexual minorities, is coming closer to the half. It’s higher than in Moscow”.

According to Nikolai Alexeev’s opinion, “it will be hard for the city authorities to use the deceit of the mayor of Moscow Yuri Luzhkov, who claimed as if 99,9% of Moscow inhabitants were against public actions of the homosexuals”. The co organizer of the Slavic Pride also mentioned, that “we will continue noticing public opinion about attitude to LGBT. It should be done both in Russia and in Belarus not to let authorities hide their own homophobia referring to public opinion”.
